Odd.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-764\" style=\"width: 316px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/winedarksea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/StumpfPost1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-764\" title=\"StumpfPost1\" src=\"http:\/\/winedarksea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/StumpfPost1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winedarksea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/StumpfPost1.jpg 316w, https:\/\/winedarksea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/StumpfPost1-178x300.jpg 178w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dendrogram displaying various segments from Romeo and Juliet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To expand on Michael Witmore\u2019s comments in his previous post, it is indeed odd how provisional our results are.\u00a0 Case in point: I have been examining what <a href=\"http:\/\/openlibrary.org\/books\/OL2719170M\/Computation_into_criticism\">John Burrows<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/j9r6521v6p670672\/\">Hugh Craig<\/a> have called the &#8220;ideolects&#8221; of characters in connection with the plays in which they appear.\u00a0 I stumbled upon this idea while looking at Shakespeare\u2019s <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em> and asking how the language of the title characters may be steering this play towards tragedy or comedy. (This was done as for a panel I presented on with Witmore \u00a0and William Blake for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.library.wisc.edu\/digitalsalon\/\">digital salon<\/a> at UW-Madison.) \u00a0Witmore and Blake are themselves working on an analysis of <em>Hamlet<\/em> without the prince, and the <em>1 Henry plays\/Merry Wives of Windsor<\/em> without Falstaff: we&#8217;re all interested in this kind of &#8220;subtraction experiment.&#8221; To see my initial findings using this techniques, you can visit my blog, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/allistrue.wordpress.com\/\">All Is True<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And yet, we know that when human beings are involved, all findings are provisional.
